Copyright Protection is an aspect of Intellectual property law, which also covers patents, trademarks.
What types of work is protected under the law?
The categories of work covered under this area include: literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works.
These works include:
Literary Works:
- E-books: This can include a self-published e-book on Amazon or other self-publishing platform.
- Blog Posts: A series of blog articles about on any topic written by a content creator, entrepreneur or business owner.
- Online Courses: The written materials and course content for an online course that has been designed and prepared by a content creator, entrepreneur or business owner.
- Newsletters: A subscription-based newsletter.
- Social Media Captions: Original and creative captions used by an influencer on social media.
Dramatic Works
- YouTube Channel (Original) Content: The script, performance and edited videos published on a YouTube channel by a content creator, entrepreneur or business owner.
- Live Streams: This shall cover a scripted live event hosted by a gamer on Twitch.

What is the impact of copyright protection?
Once work is protected under copyright law the copyright holder has exclusive rights to control how their work is used and distributed.
What is the remedy for unauthorized use of copyright protected works?
There are circumstances where a person can legitimately use copyright protected works without breaking the law (i.e. fair use / dealing). Where the use is deemed to be a violation of copyright law, the copyright holder is entitled to claim damages (compensation for unauthorized use).
